Home Base
This year’s homebase is Southridge High School located at 1110 S. Main Street in Huntingburg, IN. Youth and adults will sleep in classrooms, all of which are carpeted. The building is air-conditioned.

Late Arrival / Early Dismissal
While Huntingburg is relatively close to home, youth are asked to commit to the entirety of the mission trip experience. Youth and adults cannot arrive late or leave the site early. Youth are also not permitted to drive themselves to the mission trip.

Cell Phone Policy
We will be using a common sense approach to phone usage. There will be times when youth and adults will be asked to put their phones away (during Mass, programs, worksites, and lights out). There will be limited free time in the afternoon when cell phones may be used to check in with parents. In addition, it should be noted that cell service in the area is weak and may not have good coverage.

Emergency Contact Phone Numbers:
For emergencies, please contact our mission trip leader, Michelle Fessel (812-968-4436).

What To Pack
CHWC provides a safe and welcoming environment that exemplifies the Christian Community. For this reason, all youth and adults are asked to dress in a manner that is modest and appropriate for a Catholic environment.

  • Please be sure to bring closed-toe shoes or work boots for the worksite. Flip flops and slides are only allowed during free time.

  • Shirts worn at worksites and home base must have sleeves and cover up all parts of the chest, mid-section, and back.

  • Please be modest when packing shorts and bathing suits.

  • Personal appearance is not to be sexually suggestive or revealing nor display offensive or suggestive symbols/statements. T-shirts with beer/alcohol logos are also prohibited.

Service Sites
CHWC has worked hard to provide an excellent mix of traditional work sites (painting, yard work, building rehab) and social agencies including senior citizen homes, area parish needs, daycare centers, and homes for persons with disabilities. Most sites are within 15 minutes of the home base; however, some sites are as far away as 45 minutes. This year, youth will have unique opportunities at St. Meinrad Archabbey, Sisters of St. Benedict Monastery, and St. Joseph’s Holy Family.

Food While On Mission
The menu offered by Catholic Heart Workcamp is based on a well-balanced diet that will provide all the nutritional and calorie needs.

  • Breakfast includes juice, cereal, muffins, bagels, danishes, fruit, yogurt, and milk. Twice during the week, a hot breakfast item will be provided.

  • Daily lunch at worksites includes an Uncrustable (peanut butter sandwich) or a cold cut sandwich, various prepackaged snacks, and a drink.

  • Dinner meals will include hamburgers, chicken tenders, tacos, etc., side dishes, and desserts.

All menus accommodate youth and adults with common food allergies and sensitivities (vegetarian, gluten allergy, nut allergy). However, if a camper requires a special diet, they may bring their own food to supplement their meals and snacks. CHWC will provide a space in the refrigerator for food storage. However, CHWC does not permit any campers (including adult chaperones) to cook or have access to the ovens. Make sure you identify your allergies and dietary needs in all registration paperwork and contact Michelle with information about the specific needs.

Showering
In accordance with the Bishops Charter for the Protection of Children, CHWC has implemented separate shower times for teens and adults. The showers will be available each afternoon during free time. Participants are asked to shower daily. The majority of the showers are communal, so campers must wear a bathing suit when showering. We recommend also wearing flip-flops when showering.

Additional Policies and Processes
CHWC has many years of experience and an excellent track record of providing a safe environment for youth and adult campers. Please take a moment to become familiar with the code of behavior, medical policy, and sexual harassment policy which will be enforced for the good of everyone while on the mission trip this summer.

Free Day
On the last day of the mission trip, our group will spend a fun and relaxing day at Blue River canoeing. (If the weather is poor, we will spend the day at Marengo Caves. Both locations are along Highway 64 in Crawford County.)

Permission forms are required for each youth and adult. We will collect these paper forms at drop off on July 7. The price of admission is included in the mission trip cost. Additional spending money for the free day is not necessary.
